3 Unexpected Snowfalls that Shocked Locals

In Philadelphia, we know that the winter months come along with snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. Every year, thousands of Pennsylvanians pack their bags and call up their local travel agents for vacation in Philadelphia, PA, to help them escape to warmer climates like the beaches of the Caribbean or the warm winds of Mexico. But not many places in the world are totally safe from snow—even if locals think they are. Some of the most unexpected snowfalls in history include:

  • Los Angeles, California. In January of 1949, the City of Angels was treated to a shocking surprise as they woke up to begin their day—snow! Half an inch of snow dusted the city over the course of three days to the surprise of locals, who dubbed the event “The Big Snow of ’49.” Though shocked, locals handled the event with a great sense of humor, covering their windows with drawings of sombrero-wearing snowmen and gifting one another with snow shovels.
  • Mauna Kea, Hawaii. At 14,000 feet above sea level, the dormant volcano of Mauna Kea in Hawaii is one of the last places you’d expect to see snow during the Aloha State’s famously hot summer months. However, in June of 2011, the mountain was treated to a light dusting of snow. Native Hawaiians informed news stations that though the mountaintop regularly saw snow during the winter, the sight of snow during the summer was a truly bizarre occurrence.
  • Phoenix, Arizona. Though snow is common in Arizona’s northern mountain ranges, it’s practically unheard of in the dry and arid climate of the state’s capital. Which is probably why on January 21, 1937, locals were shocked to see an inch of snow lying on the ground. Newspapers covered the event, calling the snow shower “an unrelenting barrage of bitter cold.” Phoenix would not see snow again until 1998, when .22 inches of flurries would cover the city.
