4 International Travel Considerations For LGBT+ Travelers

Traveling to new places is one of the greatest joys in life. Unfortunately, members of the LGBT+ community may face unique challenges when traveling abroad. If you’re planning an international vacation, take these four considerations for safer and easier travels.

You are bound to the laws of the country you’re in.

Remember that when you travel, you’re obligated to follow the laws of the country you’re in—not the laws of the United States. Many countries do not legally recognize same-sex marriages and consensual same-sex relationships are against the law in over 70 countries. Before you choose a destination, research your options using the U.S. Department of State’s official advisories. Learn which laws are different than those of the United States and follow them.

You may need to change your name on your passport.

Some transgender travelers have reported difficulties entering a country with a passport that doesn’t reflect their current name or gender identity. If you plan to travel abroad, leave yourself plenty of time to update your name or sex marker on your passport before you leave.

The embassy can assist you if you run into trouble.

The United States maintains embassies and consulates in almost every country in the world. Consular officers will protect you and anyone you travel with and will maintain your privacy. Before you travel, write down the address of the U.S. embassy in both English and the native language of the country you’re traveling to, as well as the embassy’s phone number. If you are arrested abroad, immediately request assistance from the U.S. embassy.
